Gratuity Guidelines

Updated: Apr 23

Every country you visit has a different etiquette when it comes to who to tip, how much to tip and when it would be downright rude to offer a tip. We, at Mafigeni, employ people from previously disadvantaged areas within the local community, and all our staff (guides and lodge staff) do not earn a large basic salary and therefore rely on tips from customers in order to survive financially.

The following amounts are a basic guideline and you can always reward excellent service with a larger gratuity.

In our industry, a standard gratuity for lodge staff seems to range between 15%-20% of the rate you paid (i.e. KNP & Surround Camera tour of $5,950 less airfare of $1,500 would be $4,450 @ 15% tip would equal $890 paid by each guest).  Below is a table with a recommended guideline for tipping.

For gratuities to Guides, Trackers/Skinners and Chefs in camp, we recommend you tip individually and directly.

Our lodge staff (cleaners, laundry, gardener, security, etc.) all contribute to your safari, and we therefore choose to pool these gratuities and share the tips equally among them, so please request an envelope from Marlie and hand the sealed envelope to Marlie.

For many reasons, we appreciate gratuities being handled in cash; however, we do accept credit cards for your convenience.

Thank you in advance for your generous consideration!
